Intermittent Fasting: Types, Evolution, and Considerations

Intermittent fasting

What is Intermittent fasting?

Intermittent fasting is a type of dietary practice in which regular periods of eating and fasting are alternated to intentionally control the duration of fasting beyond a certain level. Depending on the ratio of fasting time to eating time, it is broadly categorized into the 23:1 fasting (eating once a day) and the 16:8 fasting (16 hours of fasting) methods, among which the latter is the most well-known. Many practitioners may also experiment with adjusting these ratios slightly to suit their preferences.

The Evolution of Intermittent Fasting

In its early days, intermittent fasting was perceived as a kind of folk remedy or just a passing trend, with many medical professionals having a negative view of intentionally skipping meals without specific reasons. However, as research on the effects of fasting on the body continued, positive perspectives on it gradually grew. Today, you can find recommendations for intermittent fasting and hear from doctors and scholars who either recommend or practice it themselves through various media channels. The effects of autophagy, a process induced by fasting, have even been recognized with a Nobel Prize, and clinically, internal medicine doctors sometimes recommend intermittent fasting for obese patients. In South Korea, intermittent fasting gained popularity after it was featured in the SBS Special Program "Meal Rebellion" on March 18, 2013, and since the late 2010s, the number of individuals regularly practicing intermittent fasting has increased significantly.

Conclusion

It is quite clear that we can expect very exceptional effects from this method, other than from conventional hospital treatments.  Whether or not to practice intermittent fasting and how to do it should be decided by considering one's own overall health and circumstances. Especially, individuals taking medication or having underlying conditions like diabetes should consult with a doctor. It's essential to remember that people writing on the internet are not experts and do not know about your specific health conditions.  ( Referred to Namuwiki )
