"Postoperative Endophthalmitis and An after-cataract as Major Side Effects"
According to a survey by the Korea Consumer Agency, the most common side effects of cataract surgery were 'Postoperative Endophthalmitis and An after-cataract accounting for 6 cases (15.8%) each, followed by 'posterior capsule rupture' with 5 cases (13.2%). "Postoperative Endophthalmitis " refers to the state where the eye is infected with bacteria or viruses. Dr. Jo Beom-jin, the director of Hangil Eye Hospital, stated, "The eye is a favorable environment for the growth of bacteria and the like, making it risky." He also mentioned, "If Postoperative Endophthalmitis is suppressed early, there will be no lingering effects such as vision impairment, but in severe cases, it can even lead to blindness." An after-cataract refers to the occurrence of cloudiness in the preserved posterior capsule after cataract surgery. Posterior capsule rupture is a symptom where the thin membrane behind the lens, known as the posterior capsule, tears.

Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery involves making a small incision of 2.2 to 3 mm at the edge of the cornea to remove the cloudy lens. The delicate membrane (with a thickness of 1µm) that encloses the lens needs to be kept intact, and only the lens itself needs to be removed. However, due to the fragility of the lens membrane, there are cases where it tears or gets damaged during surgery. Experts suggest that a minimum of 1000 cataract surgeries is required to lower the failure rate.
Caution for Patients with Hypertension, Diabetes, and Retinal Abnormalities
In this survey, among the 38 cases of side effects, 16 cases (42.1%) resulted in "visual impairment" that could not be restored to pre-surgery levels. Among these, the majority, accounting for 14 cases (87.5%), had underlying internal medical conditions such as hypertension and diabetes or pre-existing eye diseases. Professor Patrick Kim from Hallym University Chuncheon Sacred Heart Hospital's ophthalmology department stated, "Patients with uncontrolled blood pressure or blood sugar have a higher frequency of surgical side effects," and added, "Blood pressure and blood sugar should be stabilized before cataract surgery." Individuals with eye conditions like uveitis should have no inflammation for at least 3 months before undergoing cataract surgery, and patients with retinal diseases like macular degeneration should be informed that cataract surgery might not yield complete results, explained Professor Kim.
Immediate Consultation for Pain and Conjunctival Congestion After Cataract Surgery
Cataracts
a condition where the transparent lens becomes cloudy, affect anyone as they age. As cataracts worsen, symptoms like blurred vision, glare, and halos appear. If the symptoms become severe enough to interfere with daily life, surgery to replace the cloudy lens with an artificial one becomes necessary. Neglecting treatment can lead to excessive clouding of the lens and even blindness, so timely surgery is crucial.
However, after cataract surgery, monitoring the progress is essential. If there is pain, decreased vision, or conjunctival congestion in the eyes after surgery, it could be guidance inflammation, and immediate consultation is advised. As guidance inflammation can lead to severe consequences like blindness if left untreated, it's important to seek emergency treatment. For those with hypertension, diabetes, glaucoma, uveitis, and retinal diseases, regular check-ups are essential.
